Bates' biography was first published in 1878, and the present edition is revised and augmented with a bibliographical appendix. This copy is profusely extra-illustrated with examples of Cruikshank's work--including book illustrations, designs for wrappers, caricatures--executed in a variety of media throughout his life, and includes illustrations from Ainsworth's novels Jack Sheppard and The Tower of London , and Dickens' Sketches by Boz , as well as a series of portraits of Cruikshank by various artists.
