London and Birmingham: Houghton and Hammond for Houlston and Sons and Houghton and Hammond, 1879. 2 volumes, 4° (271 x 216mm). Woodcut frontispiece and 15 plates after Cruikshank, 14 on india paper and mounted, one manuscript facsimile. Illustrations in the text. EXTRA-ILLUSTRATED with: 6 etched, woodcut, or photographic portraits of Cruikshank; c. 488 etched, woodcut, and other prints, leaves and wrappers with designs by or after Cruikshank, some hand-coloured or printed in colours, 2 folding; one pen-and-ink sketch after Cruikshank; a reissue of Cruikshank's The Bachelor's Own Book (Glasgow: David Bryce & Son, [n.d.]), all inlaid to size within red hand-ruled borders. (Some spotting, some extra-illustrations with neatly-repaired tears or light damp-staining). Early 20th-century half chestnut crushed morocco gilt by Ware, Bristol, spines gilt in compartments, lettered in 2, top edges gilt, section of original gilt cloth upper panel laid down and bound in at end of vol. I. AN EXTRA-ILLUSTRATED, LARGE-PAPER COPY OF THE SECOND AND BEST EDITION OF BATES' 'CRITICO-BIBLIOGRAPHICAL ESSAY'. Bates' biography was first published in 1878, and the present edition is revised and augmented with a bibliographical appendix. This copy is profusely extra-illustrated with examples of Cruikshank's work--including book illustrations, designs for wrappers, caricatures--executed in a variety of media throughout his life, and includes illustrations from Ainsworth's novels Jack Sheppard and The Tower of London , and Dickens' Sketches by Boz , as well as a series of portraits of Cruikshank by various artists.
