CRUIKSHANK, George (1792-1878)--William Blanchard JERROLD (1826-1884). The Life of George Cruikshank . [London: Chatto and Windus], '1880' [but 1882]. 2 volumes extended to 4, 2° (430 x 294mm). Later title pages printed in red and black, marked 'Special Copy' and erroneously dated '1880', the 8° text leaves inlaid to size. EXTRA-ILLUSTRATED with 1,719 watercolours, drawings, manuscripts and prints [count from typescript contents leaf tipped into vol. I], either inlaid to size or tipped onto blank leaves, comprising: 7 watercolours and drawings, including a sheet of pencil and watercolour drawings by George Cruikshank; 1,695 prints and other items of printed ephemera, many of the prints coloured, by George Cruikshank Isaac Cruikshank Robert Cruikshank John Leech Thomas Rowlandson James Gillray and others; 17 manuscript and signed items, including an autograph letter signed from George Cruikshank (Occasional light spotting, some light offsetting, original titles removed.) Early 20th-century crushed red morocco gilt by Bayntun, Bath, covers with border of gilt and black rules enclosing panel of gilt gouges with foliate corner-pieces, gilt spine compartments, gilt edges (extremities rubbed and scuffed). Provenance : Chas. J. Sawyer Ltd., London (bookseller's tickets). FIRST EDITION. AN EXTENSIVELY EXTRA-ILLUSTRATED COPY, augmented with a large number of prints by Cruikshank, members of his family, and his contemporaries, together with prints depicting people and locations mentioned in Jerrold's text, these complemented by manuscript material by George Cruikshank members of his family and his larger circle.
