Curtis, Edward S. THE NORTH AMERICAN INDIAN. [CAMBRIDGE, MASSACHUSETTS: UNIVERSITY PRESS], 1913 Text volume 9 only, 4to (12 1/4 x 9 3/8 ins.; 310 x 238 mm). 75 fine photogravures in sepia after Curtis on Japon vellum, depicting the Salishan Tribes through portraits, landscapes, textiles, costumes and ceremonial objects, includes the Skokomish Baskets plate printed in color; clean internally with no browning and original tissue guards intact. Publisher's brown half brown levant morocco and gilt; hinges reinforced, a little rubbing to spine ends. Half-morocco folding case. [With:] Prospectus. Boston: Charles Lauriat Co., 1935. 9 pages of text and 2 loose photogravures in the original mailing envelope. Number 437 of a planned 500 copies (but fewer than 300 complete sets were produced). The present is on the preferred Japan vellum, while 40 were issued on the more fragile tissue and an unknown number either entirely on Van Gelder or a mixture of the that stock with the Japan.
