Roosevelt extols Curtis's work, noting that "The Indian as he has hitherto been is on the point of passing away...Curtis...is rendering a real and great service." An elaborate prospectus for The North American Indian , one of the most expensive publishing projects ever undertaken and one of the most comprehensive ethnographic records of the native tribes of North America.
