DANCKERTS, Cornelis III (1664-1717). America . Amsterdam: Niewendyk in den Atlas, [circa 1698]. Hand-coloured engraved map of the Americas on 2 sheets, joined, overall 590 x 960mm, the map showing North and South America, the Atlantic, parts of Africa, Europe and the Pacific, continents embellished with natives and animals, seas with sailing ships, two compass roses, inset north polar calotte, set in a decorative cartouche, the Danckerts imprint set within the wreath and strapwork cartouche, title set at lower right corner, lower margin decorated with scenes of Europeans trading cloth and beads for gold with the Indians. A fine and rare map of the Americas, separately published, a reduction of Justus Danckerts' larger four sheet map of the Americas, itself based on the Visscher/de Wit map of 1670. Of the Danckerts family, relatively little has been written. Keuning in Imago Mundi XII pp. 136-138, provides a short discussion of this important map making family, describing their importance in the field of wall-maps. This map of the Americas and the following of the other continents certainly derive from de Wit models of the 1660s. It is reasonable to suggest that Justus Danckerts had acquired a number of important de Wit plates of the continents, which were passed down to his son, and subsequently re-engraved. Keuning op. cit. notes the lack of dates on Cornelis III maps, "not a single dated map of his [Cornelis III] is known to me".
