DANTE ALIGHIERI. [ The Divine Comedy ], Chelsea: ASHENDENE PRESS, 1902-05, 3 vols., sm. 4°, vol. I ("Inferno") limited to 135 copies, vols. II and III ("Purgatorio" and "Paradiso") limited to 150 copies, coloured and gilt initials by Graily Hewitt and others, woodcut illustrations after the 1497 edition by C. Keates and W. Hooper, original vellum with ties (covers lightly stained). [ Ashendene Press XIII, XX & XXI: "the first book done on the 'Subiaco' type."] Loosely inserted is a one page letter from St. John Hornby, to an unnamed recipient, dated 1 December 1926, stating: "The 'Inferno' is one of the most difficult to obtain of all my books as there were fewer copies of it printed than the 'Purgatorio' & 'Paradiso', so that some sets are necessarily incomplete."
