DAPPER, Olfert (1636-1689). Naukeurige Beschryving van Morea, eertijts Peloponnesus; en de Eilanden, gelegen onder de Kusten van Morea, en Binnen en Buiten de Golf van Venetien . Amsterdam: Wolfgangh, Waesbergen, Boom, Someren and Goethals, 1688.
DAPPER, Olfert (1636-1689). Naukeurige Beschryving van Morea, eertijts Peloponnesus; en de Eilanden, gelegen onder de Kusten van Morea, en Binnen en Buiten de Golf van Venetien . Amsterdam: Wolfgangh, Waesbergen, Boom, Someren and Goethals, 1688. 2 parts in one volume, 2° (310 x 200mm). Title printed in red and black with woodcut vignette. Engraved additional title, 16 engraved maps, plans and plates after Vincenzo Maria Coronelli, Jacob van Meurs Joan Blaeu et al. on 13 sheets, 10 folding, and 29 engraved maps and illustrations in the text. Woodcut initials and tailpiece. Text printed in two columns. (Occasional light spotting or marking and browning, some light offsetting from illustrations onto text, one map trimmed touching border, paper-flaw touching text on X2, lacking final blank Y4.) Contemporary blind-tooled Netherlandish vellum, boards with ruled borders, central diamond-shaped block with foliate arabesques, spine titled in manuscript (a little marked, splitting on upper hinge). Provenance : P.G. Skinos (bookplate) -- G.J. Arvanitidi (bookplate) -- [sale, Sotheby's London, 27 September 1990, lot 253]. FIRST EDITION. DAPPER'S DESCRIPTION OF THE MOREA, CORFU, KEFALONIA, AND THE VENETIAN GULF. 'Dapper's Morea appeared only in Dutch, unlike his [ Naukeurige beschryving der Eilanden, in de Archipel der Middelantische Zee (Amsterdam: 1688)] which was translated into French in 1703. Dapper himself was not a traveller; his books on the Morea and Archipelago are compiled from other sources and are of especial interest for their plates. It is possible that Dapper produced these two works in the light of Venetian successes against the Turks, 1685-8' (Blackmer). Blackmer 452.
