Hirzel Date: 1862-1864 Description: 2 parts in 1. [2], [91]-497, [1]; [2], 399 pp. Numerous tables, a few folding. (4to) 27x18 cm (10½x7¼"), period half leather & cloth, spine gilt. First Edition. Hansen's Tables of the Moon with his theoretical discussion, issued in the Abhandlung of the Saxon Academy of Sciences. P.A. Hansen (1795-1874) was director of the Seeburg observatory at Gotha. His prominence in astronomy rests largely in his theory of the motion of the moon. With the author's presentation inscription to Friedrich Wilhelm August Argelander, director of the observatory at Bonn, Germany, on a clipped portion of the original wrapper, which is affixed to the front free endpaper. Also, the bookplate of C.H.F. Peters, director of the observatory at Hamilton College, Clinton, N.Y., and labels of Hamilton College Library (gift of Elihu Root) to front pastedown, with withdrawn rubberstamps; old paper shelf label on spine. Lot Amendments Condition: Rubbing to joints and extremities; some minor darkening within; very good. Item number: 287926
