DARTON, William, publisher. [ELLIOTT, Mary]. The Books of Birds, beautifully coloured, with a Description of Each adapted to The Capacities of Infant Minds, in words of Two and Three Syllables . London: Printed by W. Darton, n.d.[ca 1818]. 24 o (128 x 103 mm). 24 hand-colored engraved plates, each captioned and printed on the verso or recto of the letterpress text. Original printed rose wrappers, publisher's advertisements with further titles listed on lower cover. Provenance : M.A. Wilson (gift inscription inside front wrapper dated 1818). The only copy listed in Moon is dated 1826, but since this copy is undated and bears an inscription dated 1818, it presumably comprises an earlier UNRECORDED EDITION. A copy of the 1826 edition sold at Sotheby's London in 1995 (2 November, lot 187).
