Mackenzie, gilt edges, occasional spotting, a few plate numbers cropped in part 3, binding slightly rubbed THIS IMPORTANT REPORT ON THE ZOOLOGICAL COLLECTIONS OBTAINED BY THE MEMBERS OF THE BEAGLE EXPEDITION IS RARELY FOUND COMPLETE. The work originally appeared in nineteen numbers published between February 1838 and October 1843. It comprises: Part I, Fossil Mammalia, by Richard Owen ([2], iv 112pp.); Part II, Mammalia, by George Waterhouse ([6], xii, 98pp.); Part III, Birds, by John Gould and George Robert Gray ([8], ii, 3-156, [8]pp.); Part IV, Fish, by Leonard Jenyns (xvi, 172pp.); Part V, Reptiles, by Thomas Bell ([vi], v-vi, 52pp.). Darwin himself contributed a geological introduction to Part I and a geographical introduction to Part II, as well as frequent notes elsewhere. The third part has 50 hand-coloured plates of birds executed by Elizabeth Gould after sketches by her husband.
