BLONDEL, Jacques-François (1705-1744). De la Distribution des Maisons de Plaisance et de la decoration des edifices en general. Paris: Charles-Antoine-Jombert, 1737. First edition, second issue of the first published work of Jacques-François Blondel "the most significant French architectural educator of the eighteenth century" (Millard). Also known as "petit Blondel" after his famous namesake François Blondel he set out to establish a domestic architectural style conforming to the classical principles used on civic buildings. After establishing his own architectural school, Blondel was appointed Professor of Architecture at the Académie Royale d'Architecture. Berlin Cat. 2400; Fowler 49; Millard 25 (second issue). Two volumes, quarto (283 x 214mm). Titles printed in red and black, etched frontispiece in vol. 1, 155 engraved plates, some of which folding or double-page (some toning, mostly to text leaves). Contemporary black morocco gilt, edges gilt (joints a little worn, spines sunned). Provenance: John Crichton-Stuart, 2nd Marquess of Bute (1793-1848; Luton Library bookplate).
