Titles printed in red and black, with portrait vignettes of Thomas Percy Engraved 'King's Library' series title after Blanche McManus. Illuminated with 52 hand-drawn and coloured pictorial and decorative head- and tail- pieces, borders, and initials in gold and colours, some heightened in white. (Some gatherings affected by damp, principally in the margins, occasionally causing leaves to adhere, but also on the text and illumination.) Contemporary crushed tan morocco gilt by C.J. Sawyer, the covers with 2 gilt and one black fillet forming the border, the spines divided in 6 compartments by raised bands, titled in one compartment and dated at the foot, the other compartments decorated with gilt and black fillets, the bands decorated with gilt dots, gilt edges (a few light scuff marks and slight discoloration). Provenance : Sir Weetman Dickinson Pearson Bt., first Viscount Cowdray (1856-1927, armorial bookplate dated 1922) and Annie Cowdray (his wife, bookplate dated 1922); Cowdray sale, Sotheby's, 16-17 February 1948, lot 125.
