First American edition, likely review copy. With the blank leaf between the Appendix and Notes in vol. 1, sometimes absent. A contemporary pencil note in Part One states that this copy was sent to the editor of the North American Review by a Boston publisher. Sabin 96064 and 96065; Howes T-279. Two volumes, octavo. (Some foxing.) Vol 1: brown publisher's cloth (rubbed, spine ends and corners chipped, corner torn from r.f.e.). Provenance: Editor of the North American Review (early pencil inscription from Jordan Weeks Co., Boston publishers). Vol 2: brown publisher's cloth (sunning, mild rubbing, light wear to extremeties, endpapers discolored). Provenance: George P. Bergen (early ownership inscription). Housed together in a custom morocco-backed slipcase. Please note this lot is the property of a private individual.
