[2], xxviii, 464 pp. Translated by Henry Reeve. Preface and notes by John C. Spencer. (8vo) 23.7x14.5 cm (9¼x5¾"), original blind-stamped and textured purple cloth, spine lettered in gilt. Second American edition. A penetrating study and classic analysis of the American political character during the early 1800’s, first published in Paris in 1835. Alexis de Tocqueville (1805-1859), a French aristocrat who visited the United States in 1831, succeeded in portraying a very accurate representation of American culture, including its politics, legal system, economy, history, geography, and of course the people. Volume I covers more on the dynamics and structures of the American system, including: the origins and social condition of the Anglo-Americans, the principle of sovereignty, townships, legislative and judicial power, Federal Constitution and systems, and includes the Constitution of the United States and of New York. Reeve's translation of Democracy in America was first published by Saunders & Otley in London in 1835. Condition: Rubbing with some fraying at ends of sunned spine, fraying at corners; chip missing at top of title page, some foxing; very good.
