Diane Arbus: An Aperture Monograph Author: Arbus, Diane Place Published: Millerton, NY Publisher: Aperture Date Published: [1972] Description: [6], 15 pp. With 80 plates from photographs by Diane Arbus; frontispiece portrait of Arbus from photograph by Stephen Frank. 27.8x23 cm (11x9"), photo-pictorial boards, pictorial jacket. First Edition, first issue. Monograph produced in conjunction with the Arbus retrospective at the Museum of Modern Art organized by John Szarkowski, the year following Arbus' death by suicide. This first issue or printing includes the photograph "Two Girls in Identical Raincoats Central Park, N.Y.C, 1969" which was suppressed in all subsequent printings. "Arbus replaced photography's old model of smarmy humanism with a vision that was at once pitiless and engaged, tough and surprisingly tender." Roth, pp. 214-15. Condition: Moderate wear to jacket, 1" tear affecting 'd' on cover, price clipped; leaning, page edges yellowing slightly; very good in like jacket.
