A FELLOW WRITER AS A 'FRIEND IN THE SPIRIT'. Dickens sends thanks for a book [an edition of Ramsay's Reminiscences of Scottish Life & Character ], fulsomely thanking the recipient for 'your assurance that I have given you pleasure', and assuring Ramsay that his name, and his works are already 'too well known to me to admit of the possibility of my regarding its writer in any other light than as a friend in the spirit', and remarking that in a particular passage (appended to the letter) in which Ramsay defends his interest in Scottish humour, Ramsay had deserved 'my highest respect as a public benefactor and a brave soul'. Edward Bannerman Ramsay (1793-1872) was Dean of the Diocese of Edinburgh in the Scottish Episcopal Church, and is best known for the work referred to here (first published in 1858), which had gone through 22 editions by his death.
