Three frontispieces, and numerous wood-engravings in the text by George Cattermole and Hablot K. Browne ["Phiz"]; EXTRA-ILLUSTRATED with 71 (of 72) etched plates by Thomas Sibson (1817-1844). 20th-century half tan calf, patterned paper boards (by the Curwen Press?) gilt, top edges gilt; paper boards slipcase. Provenance : Kenneth M. Dow (signatures and bibliographical note front free endpaper volume one). FIRST EDITION IN BOOK FORM, bound from the original parts, with the rare plates by Sibson published by Tyas to coincide with and extra-illustrate Chapman and Hall's monthly issue of Master Humphrey . The plates were subsequently published in one volume by Tyas in 1842 with only 70 plates. Eckel, p. 69; Smith I: 6; Yale/Gimbel A51 and H1153 recording an incomplete set of the Sibson plates. Frontispiece and 23 plates by George Cruikshank Original violet-grey diaper cloth, covers decorated with a border of double blind fillet with broad blind arabesque border in relief, central wreath stamped in gilt on upper cover and in blind on the lower, spine elaborately lettered and decorated in gilt with three scenes from the novel, uncut (extremities just touched, mildly cocked); quarter green morocco folding box. Provenance : Small library label and Dickens's Centenary stamp front paste down. FIRST ONE VOLUME EDITION, "A NEW EDITION, REVISED AND CORRECTED" by Dickens. Smith I: p. 38; Yale/Gimbel A39.
