D Peterson edition of Great Expectations is of particular interest in that it is the FIRST ILLUSTRATED EDITION to appear anywhere, not just in America. Harper paid Dickens in cash for the advance sheets and sold these on to T.D. Peterson who issued them in several versions in July 1861 in his Dickens "Library" series. Harper then issued the work in Harper's Weekly. The first Peterson Library edition was first issued without illustrations, followed by a second issue (as here) with plates not incorporated within the text, and then a third issue with plates within the text.
