DICKSON, R. W. and Sydenham EDWARDS (1769?-1819)]. The New Flora Britannica, illustrated with one hundred and thirty-three plants . London, John Stockdale, 1812. 2 volumes in one, 4° (290 x 230mm). 60 hand-coloured frontispiece and plates, including one bis plate (19), by F. Sansom after Sydenham Edwards. (Lacking title to vol. II, very occasional light spotting, small loss to upper corner of p.257). Contemporary olive-black straight-grained morocco tooled in gilt and blind, with later Botfield arms. Dickson's famous dictionary of horticulture with Sydenham Edwards plates, was published in a number of guises. First published in 1807 as A Complete Dictionary of Practical Gardening and again in 1812 as The New Flora and The New Botanical Garden , the work includes many American plants. Sydenham Edwards, a protégé of William Curtis was renowned as one of the chief artists responsible for the illustrations to the Botanical Magazine . Cf. Dunthorne 107; Great Flower Books , p.93; cf.
