Dictionarium rusticum &; Urbanicum: or, a Dictionary of all Sorts of Country Affairs, Handicraft, Trading, and Merchandizing..., first edition, woodcut illustrations, 1p. advertisements, title and preliminaries lighty foxed, occasional spotting, contemporary panelled calf, richly gilt spine in compartments and with a green leather label, rubbed, [British Bee Books 71; Fussell pp.95-96; Goldsmiths' 4047; Perkins 408], 8vo, printed for J. Nicholson at the King’s-Arms in Little-Britain, 1704. *** A very good copy of the scarce first edition of one of the earliest attempts at a comprehensive country dictionary, variously attributed to Nathan Bailey and John Worlidge. With 'A Catalogue of Some of the Books made use of in this work', which lists around 60 books on agriculture, gardening, forestry and animal husandry. Includes entries on fruit-trees, birds, horses, hunting and hawking, fishing, bees, the making of wines and other liquors, gunpowder and the manufacturing of the counties of England.
