DILLON, Peter (1788-1847). Narrative and Successful Result of a Voyage in the South Seas . London: Hurst, Chance, and Co., 1829. 2 volumes, 8 o (212 x 135 mm). Half-titles. Folding frontispiece in each volume (one hand-colored), folding map (hand-colored in outline), one plate (some minor spotting). 19th-century diced calf by Henington (spines faded, some wear at edges and extremities). FIRST EDITION. Sent to investigate the mystery of the loss of La Pérouse and his expedition, Dillon, after several adventures in Australia, New Zealand, and Tonga, discovered La Pérouse's lost ships and several artifacts on the reefs of Vanikoro in the Santa Cruz Islands. Upon returning to England and receiving a lukewarm reception from the East India Company, Dillon left for Paris where he gave his finds to Charles X, who placed them in the Louvre. The king awarded Dillon the Légion d'honneur and an annual pension of 4000 francs. Ferguson 1255; Hill 480; Sabin 20175. (2)
