DIVINATION -- Novyi Gadatel'nik . [A New Fortune Teller]. St. Petersburg: Main Administration of Transport Routes, 1830. 2° (252 x 205mm). Two folding chromolithographs. (Large stain to two central leaves, elsewhere small marginal staining, short tear to fore-edge of one folding leaf.) Contemporary paper-covered boards (some loss and wear to the centre of spine, light mainly marginal staining). Provenance : Aleksandr Smirdin (bookplate) -- Rossica (book-label) -- Diaghilev-Lifar (sold Sotheby's, Monaco, November 1975, lot 209). FIRST EDITION. THE SMIRDIN--DIAGHILEV-LIFAR COPY OF THIS RARE WORK ON DIVINATION. With two tables, one Russian one French, on the meaning of each of the cards from the suit of Hearts in relation to character, the heart, the eyes, the tongue etc, and instructions for divination. In his introduction, the author dedicates his work to lovers, who are 'interested in everything about the object of their affections'. RARE: WorldCat records no copies in North America.
