Lot of 6. ALS, 2pp, 7.75 x 9.75 in., Albany, 15 Feb. 1823. Addressed to Stephen Van Rensselaer and signed by John Taylor (1784-1854). Contains news about Assembly business - or lack thereof. Your session is drawing to a close and little as yet is accomplished. The Tariff will I presume pass over to another session. Stephen Van Rensselaer (1765-1839) served in the New York Assembly in 1789, 1808-1810, and again in 1818, and the New York Senate 1791-1796. He was Lt. Governor in 1795 and 1798, and served in the U.S. Congress 1823-1829. In addition he served on the Erie Canal Commission and was Regent then Chancellor of the University of New York. John Taylor (1784-1854) served in the U.S. House of Representatives (1813-1833), twice serving as Speaker of the House (1820-1821, 1825-1827). He later served in the New York State Senate until forced by a paralytic stroke to resign. He moved to Cleveland, Ohio where he lived with his daughter for over a decade. ANS, 1p, approx. 6.5 x 8 in., 6 March 1811, Johnstown (NY). Christopher Yates requests Henry Yates pay for four pair of hose (hoos) made for him by Mr. Mack, since he is leaving town and has no funds on him; with a note by Mack that 44 shillings were paid by Henry Yates. Christopher P. Yates served in the New York assembly representing Montgomery County in 1784, 1785, 1788 and 1789. ANS, 1p, approx. 6 x 8 in., 12 July 1819, n.p. Note from John Eisenlord requesting Adam Eaker pay William Mitchell $115.75, docketing on verso by Eaker. John Eisenlord served in the New York Assembly in 1814 and 1815. Partially printed DS, 1p, approx. 6 x 7.75 in., docketed on verso, 13 May 1784, n.p. [presumed New York City, as the legislature met in City Hall in 1784]. Receipt for Peter Schuyler for 89 pounds, twelve shillings pay for his time served as member of the New York Assembly, signed by John Hathorn as Speaker, and James Gordon who received the pay on behalf of Schuyler. ANS, 1p (possibly leaf wrapped around another letter), n.d., n.p. Appears to be a post-script to another letter (although it has it's own PS) informing the recipient of something that just came to mind and apparently had not been included in the main letter. Signed T. Campbell (too common to track down without a bit more information) and addressed to Miss Crampe, 14 George St. (no town specified). [Surely someone with more genealogical resources can track down where these families intersect. Appears to be late 18th - early 19th century.] Repaired tear near where sealing wax was affixed. ANS, 1p, approx. 4.5 x 5.75 in., 6 march 1880, New York City. On preprinted letterhead notepaper of Campbell & Paige, Attorneys and Counsellors at Law, 102 Broadway, New York. Short note, signed Yours in haste, Douglas Campbell [Does not appear to be the same branch of the Campbell family as previous item.] Condition: Expected folds and light toning.
