DOCUMENTS OF TITLE on vellum Essex and Kent, 1436-1625 The documents comprise: Document on vellum, 20 October 1436, a grant by Thomas Uphavering of Havering-atte-Bower [in Essex] to seven recipients, including his own son William, of all his lands in Havering-atte-Bower, 11 lines in Latin on one membrane, 110 x 305mm (slight discolouration and holing), his seal in red wax pendant on vellum tag; Document on vellum, 8 July 1509, a grant by John Rochell of Roxwell in the parish of Writtle, Essex, confirming a grant in his name by his attorney, Walter Lawrence, to William Sarjent of a croft called Barett in Writtle, 8 lines in Latin on one membrane, 87 x 280mm, his seal in red wax pendant on vellum strip; Document on vellum, 12 December 1535, an indenture between John Whodell, husbandman, and his wife Agnes on the one part and William Harris yeoman, on the other, witnessing the sale by the first two to Harris of their house and possessions in Writtle and Blackmore in Essex, 30 lines in English on one membrane, approx 280 x 430mm (light discolouration), seal in green wax pendant on vellum tag; Document on vellum, 31 May 1625, grant by Thomas Hodsell of Hevychatche in the parish of Ightham in Kent of a number of parcels of land (listed in detail) in exchange for 300 pounds, 32 lines in Latin on one membrane, 270 x 350mm, seal on red wax pendant on vellum tag. PROVENANCE: A letter to Cornelius Hauck accompanying the documents indicates that they were a gift from Brryman [ sic ] Ridges at Christmas 1960. (4)
