Provenance : ELIZABETH L. DODGSON (presentation inscription from her brother dated March 29, 1876 on half title); T.A. Dymes ("from E.L. Dodgson, July 21, 1920"). FIRST EDITION, A REMARKABLE PRESENTATION COPY, BOUND IN BLUE CLOTH AND INSCRIBED BY CARROLL TO HIS SISTER ON THE DAY OF PUBLICATION: "Elizabeth L. Dodgson, with best love, from her affte. Brother, the Author Mar. 29. 1876." The day on which Dodgson went to London "to write in 80 presentation copies" which were just ready (Diaries 6 [2001], p.453). Dodgson's own copy, sold at the sale of his books in 1898, was dated 30 March 1876. The exact publication is uncertain: Dodgson wrote to Macmillan on 17 January 1876 "to advertise Snark to be published on the 1st of April -- Surely this is the fittest day for it to appear" (W-M-G-C p.90). Holiday's illustrations "are noteworthy as a triumph of art over almost intractable material" (W-M-G-C p.91). Williams-Madan-Green-Crutch 115. A VERY FINE COPY.
