Being a summary and true relation of foure voyages made by the said Sir Francis Drake ... collected out of the notes of ... Drake; ... Philip Nichols, ... Francis Fletcher ... and the notes of divers other gentlemen (who went in the said voyages). London: for Nicholas Bourne, 1653-1652. 4 parts in one volume, 4° (194 x 145mm). Engraved portrait frontispiece. (Rusthole with loss of two characters to M3 part I, and A3 part II, frontispiece expertly laid down with repaired margins, expert marginal repairs to title, small marginal repair in final leaf.) Early 20th-century burgundy morocco gilt by Zaehnsdorf, covers with triple fillet border and central oval arabesque, gilt turn-ins, gilt edges. Provenance : Thomas Edward Watson (1851-1921; bookplate; by descent to the present owners). THE FIRST COLLECTED AND MOST COMPLETE EDITION OF DRAKE'S VOYAGES, finely bound by Zaehnsdorf. The four parts of the present work are as follows: Francis Drake Revived (the voyage of 1572-1573); The World Encompassed (the voyage of 1577-1580); A summarie and true discourse of [his] West Indian Voyage (1585-1586); and A True Relation of another voyage into the West Indies (the voyage of 1595-1596, during which Drake dies).
