Objektsbeskrivning DRAWINGS FROM A LAPLAND EXPEDITION 1827 (2). Two albums of drawings from a voyage in Finnish and Swedish Lapland, and Northern Norway in 1827, all drawings signed by the two artists Branting and Wirsén. BRANTING, LARS GABRIEL. Album, containing 12 drawings in wash, regarding places in Lappland. All with manuscript title, signed "Branting" and numbered in upper corner (a few with minor spots, 1 folding drawing with repairs and tears, later pencil notes on verso). All mounted on the left margin in original light blue wrappers (some spotting, a few tears). Album size: cm 34,5 x 49. WIRSÉN, AXEL EMIL. "Des desseins par Axel Wirsen" (manuscript title on front cover). 6 drawings in pencil and ink, numbered in upper corner, signed "Axel Wirsén" (a few spots, later pencil notes on verso). All mounted on the left margin in original private grey wrappers, partly dampstained). 2 items. Drawings from an expedition from Torneå to Karesuando, to Kilopisjärvi and North Cape, led by Swedish anatomist Anders Franzén in 1827. Very little is known about the expedition, other than from a few short passages in letters written by naturalist Lars Levi Laestadius, at the time pastor in Karesuando. In the first, dated 24 July 1827 and addressed to professor G. Wahlenberg, he mentions that on the same day he had received [Anders] Retzius and Baron Wirsén who travelled in the company of Branting -and an anonymous Italian count, whom they had met in Turtula on the Finnish side. In the second letter, dated 25 Novenber 1827, addressed to Elias Fries, Laestadius touches on Franzén's and Wirsén's visit, and adds that the company, including the Italian count, continued to Norway. He mentions other vivitors, but it's unclear if those participated in Franzén's expedition. (On drawing No. 5 by Branting there are 8 figures grouped outside tents in Kågdåvaggi). Laestadius goes on to note that the weather that summer had been so foul that very little scientific research had succeded. See also: Franzén, Naturalhistorikern Lars Levi Laestadius (Luleå, 1973. Pp. 208-9). Neither Branting nor Wirsén have left traces as naturalists. Lars Gabriel Branting (1799-1881) made a career in gymnastics, first as a protégé of Pehr Henrik Ling, from 1839 as his successor. Axel Emil Wirsén (1809-1878), military officer, drawer of landscapes and painter of a few portraits. Contents of albums: Branting: 1. "L'eglise de Tornea vis-à-vis Haparanda" (today: Tornio, Finland, near Swedish border). Size: 125 x 183 mm. 2.
