DRESSER, Henry Eeles (1838-1915). A History of the Birds of Europe, including all the species inhabiting the Western Palaearctic Region . London: Taylor and Francis for the author, 1871-1896. 9 volumes including index (volume I) and supplement (volume IX), large 4° (317 x 248mm). 5pp. list of subscribers. Additional pictorial titles and 723 lithographed plates, all except two, coloured by hand, after Thorburn, Keulemans, Neale and Wolf, extra-illustrated with 3 loosely inserted uncoloured proof plates, one titled in manuscript and initialled by Dresser. Green half morocco gilt, t.e.g., (spines somewhat faded), original wrappers to the supplement bound at back of vol.IX. A FINE SET OF THE FIRST EDITION OF THIS MONUMENTAL WORK. The majority of the plates are by Keulemans, and are based on Dresser's collection of 12,000 skins. The proof plates are particularly rare and were purchased direct from the Dresser family, they are of the Striped bunting (vol.IV pl.213), Missel thrush (vol.II pl.1) on a joined sheet; the initialled plate is of the Hobby (vol.VI pl.378).
