Kodachrome color photograph of the USAAF B-29 Bomber, the "Great Artiste", signed by members of its flight and scientific crew for the Hiroshima mission. Photograph originally taken by Armament Officer, Jack Wright at Tinian Island airbase in August 1945. [Reproduced after 1995 from his color slides]. A color photograph of the decorated nose of the "Great Artiste", signed by 6 of the 13 man team on board the plane on its mission to Hiroshima as Observation plane. The signatures comprise 4 of the crew, Commander Sweeney, Albury, Gallagher and Kuharek, and 2 of the 3 scientific observers, Lawrence Johnston and Harold Agnew, the signatures collected by the official historian for the 509th Composite Group, at various reunions in the period 1996 to 2006. The photograph unframed. 205 x 295 mm. (8 x 11.5 inches.) Provenance: Robert Krauss, Official Historian for the 509th Composite Group. On the Hiroshima Mission, the Great Artiste took the role as Official Scientific Observer plane and flying in parallel with the Enola Gay, had to do the same avoiding maneuver to avoid being hit by the blast of the explosion. The scientists took photographs and readings, and made notes. All 3 scientific observers were from the Manhattan Project, Los Alamos base.
