DU FOUILLOUX, Jacques (1521?-1580). La Venerie... avec plusieurs receptes & remedes pour guerir les chiens de diverses maladies. Plus l'Adolescence de l'Autheur . Poitiers: the brothers de Marnef and Bouchet, 1568. 2 o (220 x 159 mm). Full-page woodcut on title verso of the author presenting his book to the king, 56 woodcuts of hunting scenes (including one repeat) of which 3 full-page, 5 cuts with modern coloring, woodcut initials, printed music. (Washed and pressed, small repair to upper blank margin of title and dedication leaf, small filled hole in margins of last 4 leaves.) Brown morocco, covers tooled in gold and blind to a 16th-century style interlace design, spine panelled and gilt, gilt edges, by Thompson. Provenance : Henri Gallice (1854-1930) (bookplate, his hunting collection sold en bloc to:); Marcel Jeanson (1885-1942) (bookplate, sale Sotheby's Monaco, 28 February 1987, lot 187). Fourth edition, last Poitiers edition and the first to be printed in roman type (earlier editions were in italic). Thibaud reasons that since Du Fouilloux resided in Poitiers and subsequent editions (1573 and later) were printed in Paris, the present edition was the last susceptible to have been corrected by the author and therefore the "definitive edition". The woodcuts are those of the previous editions. Mortimer (187) notes the effective use of solid black areas with details in white in a block of a dog (A8v) and two blocks of boars (M1r and M4v). RARE. Schwerdt I, 153; Souhart 148 ("une des plus jolies ditions et une des mieux faites"); Thibaud 299.
