Title printed in red and black (and ruled in red), engraved portrait of the author by Wenceslaus Hollar (ruled in red), 44 engravings by Hollar, consisting of one large folding, 11 double-page, 30 full-page and one half-page text engravings, one full-page plate, woodcut initials, head- and tail-pieces (slight defect in the engraved surface of the plate on p. 115). 18th-century English blue morocco, border and outer panels formed by gilt fillets, blind-tooled inner panels and corner ornaments, gilt-tooled and paneled spine, turn-ins gilt, edges gilt, BY ROGER PAYNE (spine faded, some wear to joints and extremities). Provenance : John Hunter (sale Sotheby's, 4 February 1805, lot 194); Richard Heber (his acquisition note on front flyleaf; his sale, R.H. Evans, part VII, 25 May 1835, lot 2215); Eric S. Quayle (bookplate); acquired through Arthur Freeman, 1966. FIRST EDITION. THE FINE HEBER COPY IN A ROGER PAYNE BINDING of an important record of St. Paul's Cathedral before it was destroyed in the Great Fire. The first is the only edition to contain the finest impressions and full complement of Hollar's engravings. This copy with the well-known portrait by S. Harding of Roger Payne in his workshop mounted on a blank rear fly-leaf. Tipped-in at front is a typed letter signed from H.M. Nixon to Eric Quayle, stating that it is "more than probable" a binding by Roger Payne based on two tools which can "definitely be identified from their bills as Payne's work" Pforzheimer 341; Wing D-2482.
