DUKE, J. The Compleat Florist. London: for the author, 1747. 8° (215 x 127mm). Hand-coloured engraved frontispiece and title, 100 hand-coloured etched and engraved plates. (Occasional light spotting, plates 6 and 34 just trimmed at outer edge, plate 75 with clean tear to lower outer corner affecting one line of caption, without loss.) Modern half mottled calf. Provenance : F. H. L. Koss (signature dated 1817). Second edition of Duke's treatise: the first was published in two volumes in 1740. The present edition was sold in both coloured and uncoloured states, costing 15 s and 5 s respectively. Each of the first six plates bears an engraved caption stating whose garden supplied the specimen for illustration. Henrey II, pp. 459-462; Nissen BBI 554; Dunthorne 102.
