Engraved title-page and 26 steel-engraved plates after Seth Eastman by C. Burt, J. Smillie, J.C. McRae, A. Jones, and C.E. Wagstaff & J. Andrews. (Some very pale occasional spotting.) Publisher's brown morocco gilt (rebacked preserving original spine panel, some fading along edges of covers); cloth folding case. Provenance : Dr. A.F. Dulin (contemporary gift inscription from C.F.M. Noland(?) on front flyleaf). FIRST EDITION. The plates are after the author's husband, Seth Eastman an accomplished artist and topographical draftsman. They depict Indians performing various rituals and activities such as burial, administering medicine, dancing, traveling, fishing, spearing muskrats and dressing a buffalo skin. "A beautiful book upon aboriginal manners and history, written by a lady and illustrated by her husband, both of whom were well fitted for the task by long residence among the Indians" (Field 477 note).
