Beschreibung:

Edward Bartlett (c. 1836-1908) A Monograph of the Weaver-birds, Ploceidae, and Arboreal and Terrestrial Finches, Fringillidae. Maidstone: by the author, 1888-[1889]. Parts 1-5 (all published) in one volume, 4° (248 x 190mm). 31 hand-coloured lithographic plates after and by F. W. Frohawk, printed by Hanhart. Contemporary brown half morocco, spine in six compartments with raised bands, lettered in the second and fourth, the others with simple repeat pattern in gilt, t.e.g, by R.H. Porter. A fine copy of the first edition, including plates after Frowhawk. 'Of a work which was planned to extend to between 90 and 95 parts and to embrace all the known species of Ploceidae and Fringillidae. In the fragmentary form in which the publication remains, the pagination and plate-numbering are incomplete, being distinct for each genus'. It is interesting to note that the Bradley Martin copy is the only other copy of this work to have sold at auction in the past 25 years with all of the plates hand-coloured: the records suggest that it is more normal to encounter this work with only 12 of the 31 plates coloured. Bartlett's monograph was the first to feature the ornithological work of Frederick William Frohawk (1861-1946). Christine Jackson writes of Frohawk's ornithological work "His paintings are attractive and painstaking and he attempted to represent a living bird of character, rather than just a representative of the species" ( Dictionary of Bird Artists of the World p.247); he eventually had over 1000 of his drawings reproduced in ornithological publications. Ellis/Mengel 178; Mullens & Swann 48; Nissen IVB 77; Trinity/Breit 28; Yale/Ripley 22; Zimmer 41.
