EDWARD CHAMBERLAYNE Angliae Notitia: or, The Present State of England ... eighteenth edition, with great additions London: T. Hodgkin for R. Scot, R. Chiswell, M. Gillyflower and G. Sawbridge, 1694. 8vo. (6¼ x 3¾in; 156 x 94mm), engraved frontispiece, contemporary calf with morocco lettering-piece, red speckled edges (extremities rubbed, joints and front inner hinges split). Provenance : J.W. Goldman (bookplate; sold at Hodgson's, 24 November 1966, lot 11, to Epworth for £8). Exhibited : Cricket ... an Exhibition ... presented by the National Book League , 1950, no. 24. THE FIRST EDITION TO REFER TO CRICKET AS A NATIONAL RECREATION (see p. 52). As Diana Rait Kerr notes in the exhibition catalogue, "Earlier editions of this work, first published anonymously in 1669, give long lists of national games, but omit any references to cricket". Goldsmiths' Library of Economic Literature 3004; Kress Library of Business and Economics 1836; Wing C1835; Goldman p. 17: "one of the earliest references to cricket"; cf. Padwick 856 who errs in stating that the reference first appeared in the 22nd edition (1707).
