EDWARD WESTON Fifty Photographs . New York: Duell Sloan & Pearce, 1947. Quarto (305 x 235 mm). 51 full-page black and white photographs. Original black beveled boards and black cloth spine, spine lettered in silver (extremities rubbed); original dustjacket (spine ends and top edge of back panel chipped, a few short tears, light browning); cloth folding box. Provenance : Dr. and Mrs. Newgard (inscription from Edward Weston . FIRST EDITION IN DUSTJACKET, INSCRIBED BY THE PHOTOGRAPHER. Inscribed copies are distinctly uncommon. Weston selected the images himself: "fifty of my favorite photographs chosen because they have lived well and because they have not been reproduced... in book form before". "The overall effect of this highly unusual selection is to make visible the real legacy of Weston's work, the way it influenced much of what would come after" ( 101 Books ). This copy was exhibited in 'The Open Book' at the International Center of Photography (17 June - 4 September, 2005). One of 1500 numbered copies with Weston's manuscript initials tipped-in, as issued. 101 Books , pp.128-131; The Open Book , pp.150-51; Regards à travers le livre 89
