First work: 4 parts in 2 volumes, 2 section titles (lacks general title and section titles to parts III and IV). Hand-coloured engraved emblematic frontispiece, 210 FINE HAND-COLOURED ENGRAVED PLATES (189 of birds, 1 a map with insects and inset panel depicting a bird), 1 uncoloured plate. Second work: 3 parts in 2 volumes, half-title in French and English with engraved vignette, section titles in French and English to parts I and II on 4 leaves (lacking titles to part III). Engraved portrait of Edwards by J. S. Miller after B. Dandridge, 152 FINE HAND-COLOURED ENGRAVED PLATES (128 of birds), Edwards' engraved armorial bookplate printed a0 a tailpiece on p.108. (Occasional light spotting, a few plates and facing leaves of text browned.) Uniform 19th-century half calf, spines gilt, g.e. (extremities a little scuffed). FIRST EDITIONS. Although published under the separate title Gleanings , the final three parts are a continuation of the first four, the plates numbered consecutively, and without these the work is considered incomplete. In this copy the majority of the plates are numbered in a contemporary manuscript hand. The colouring was carefully supervised by Edwards: the colourists worked from twelve 'ideal' copies coloured by Edwards himself.
