Provenance : James Robson (bookseller, manuscript note, see below); John Clerk Brodie (armorial bookplate). ONE OF 12 SETS COLOURED BY EDWARDS. The two works are now considered as one: the bindings are numbered consecutively to 'VII'. Mounted on the front pastedown of the first volume is a large fragment from a (?)wrapper with a contemporary manuscript note "Natural History Colourd by Edwards's Hand [illegible] Pr Sett 12 Setts only were Colourd by the Author". The Bradley Martin catalogue mentions 12 'model copies he had colored himself' for use by his colorists. According to Zimmer the bookseller Robson "was the purchaser (May 1, 1769) of all the remaining copies of Edward's Natural History, the original copper-plates, letter-press and all articles in Edward's possession relative to the same." (p.529): this would presumably include the colourist's copies. This supposition is strengthened by the tipped-in manuscript note which is in Robson's hand (a comparison with his manuscript 'Journal of a Tour to Italy' in the British Library [acc.no.38837] confirms this). Nissen IVB 286-288; Fine Bird Books p.78; Zimmer pp.192-198. The first work (vol.I) also includes [J.Robson(?)] Some memoirs of the life and works of George Edwards London: for J.Robson, 1776.
