Edwards (George). Gleanings of Natural History, Exhibiting Figures of Quadrupeds, Birds, Insects, Plants, &c. Most of which have not, till now, been either Figured or Described. With Descriptions of Seventy Different Subjects, Designed, Engraved, and Coloured after Nature, 3 vols., 1758-64, engraved portrait of George Edwards by J.S. Miller after B. Dandridge, half title vignette, 152 fine hand-coloured copper-engraved plates by and after Edwards, English and French explanatory text in double-column, some light offsetting to text, bookplates, later diced and panelled calf (volume III near uniform), spines and edges lightly rubbed, 4to. Anker 126; Fine Bird Books 73; Nissen IVB 288. The Gleanings, often found with Edwards’ A Natural History of Uncommon Birds, is “one of the most important of all Bird Books, both as a Fine Bird Book and as a work of Ornithology. It is still high on each list” (Fine Bird Books). (3)
