Edwin Lord Weeks (American, 1849-1903) Trader with Camels on the Shore Signed, inscribed and dated "E.L Weeks Tanjer '78" l.l. Oil on canvas, 13 1/4 x 23 1/2 in. (33.5 x 59.5 cm), in a period frame, possibly designed by the artist. Condition: Flaking and losses, (primarily near lower edge). Provenance: A Massachusetts library. N.B. Edwin Lord Weeks was born in 1849 in Newton, a suburb of Boston. His parents were wealthy spice and tea merchants and were able to financially support their son while he traveled and painted around the world. His exotic subjects were well received upon his return and his paintings were exhibited at the Boston Art Club. His most famous works are his Oriental scenes from his trips to India and North Africa. These often depict landscapes and scenes of everyday life. He painted this scene in Tangier, a seaport on the northwest coast of Morocco. The Moorish style of the frame is consistent with Weeks's subject matter.
