EIGHT MINIATURE PAINTINGS DEPICTING DEITIES - INDIA, 19th CENTURY Katalognummer: AB0319-1146 Miniature painting with colors and gold on paper North India, Kashmir, mid-19th century The first, a depiction of the famous scene in which Vishnu emerges, incarnated as a lion, and kills the demon Hiranyakashipu, who is lying beneath his legs. The second, with the four-armed God Shiva sitting on a throne, his eye of wisdom, painted in red on his forehead. The third, a depiction of Vishnu as Varahavatara, Vishnu’s incarnation as a boar and the related killing of the demon Hiranyaksha. The fourth, Vishnu in his incarnation as a fish (Matsyavatara), the demon left below has stolen the sacred scriptures and hidden them on the ocean floor, so only the fish can find and save them. All four with fine golden floral borders. The other four pages bear fine ornamental decoration and a field with Sharada script.
