Beschreibung:

TOWARDS A UNIFIED FIELD THEORY. Autograph Manuscript Signed twice ("A. Einstein"), 4 pp recto only, 4to, [1927], entitled "Zu Kaluzas Theorie des Zusammenhanges von Gravitation und Elektrizität (Zweite Mitteilung)" ("On Kaluza's Theory of the Interrelationship of Gravity and Electricity (second article"), various corrections and crossed out sentences in pencil, a few ink splotches, first leaf with paperclip rust mark and minimal fraying at right edge. Einstein works towards a unified field theory, reviewing the work of his peer Theodor Franz Eduard Kaluza [1885-1954]. Kaluza's theory, known as "Kaluza-Klein theory," aimed to unify the two fundamental forces of gravity and electromagnetism, and was first published in 1921. Kaluza extends general relativity to a five-dimensional space. The resulting equations led to developments by other physicists, such as Albert Einstein's "field equations" and Maxwell's "electromagnetic field." In his later years, Einstein worked more on the interrelationship of gravity and electricity, publishing an article on unified field theory in Scientific American in 1950. The present article was published as Zu Kaluzas Theorie des Zusammenhanges von Gravitation und Elektrizität; Erste und Zweite Mitteilung (Berlin: Verlag der Akademie der Wissenschaft, 1927). Transcription on request. Provenance: Charles Hamilton Auction Number 75, February 21, 1974, lot 157. See illustration.
