THE EXPENSE OF ENERGY INVOLVED IN BEING EINSTEIN: in 1930, writing from Brussels, Einstein complains at the exhausting nature of his schedule, which has not permitted him to visit his son: 'Es ist schlimm, dass ich so viele Dinge thun muss, die zwar an und für sich sehr nützlich, für mich selbst aber leer sind, und doch so viel Kraft kosten [It is awful that I have to take on so many things that in and for themselves are very useful but for me personally are empty, and take up so much energy]'. In the earlier postcards, Einstein writes to discuss a question involving some gentlemen in Vienna (possibly a job application by Hans Albert), 'If they don't reply to you, there is nothing to be done in the matter. Probably they have lost the inclination because of something or other you wrote; it is impossible to tell', and, later the same summer, gives news of a walking holiday with Eduard, in which they have been 'busier with Nietzsche than with climbing' -- Eduard encloses a long message giving news of his holiday and plans.
