ELGAR, Sir Edward (1857-1934). Portrait photograph signed and inscribed 'Ethel Hobday with very kind regards Edward Elgar,' showing the seated composer with a spaniel on his lap, 230 x 150mm., black and white, framed with an autograph letter signed to Ethel Hobday, Marl Bank, 17 November 193(?)3 , accompanying the photograph, 'I am no good as a publicity agent: please accept the enclosed photo...' (ink of the inscription slightly faded) . Ethel Hobday (née Sharpe) was a distinguished pianist and had been a friend of Brahms in Vienna (compare lot ). She married the viola player Alfred Charles Hobday in 1899, with whom she gave many recitals, concentrating in later years on chamber music.
