Elizabeth I Silver-Mounted Rhenish Saltglazed 'Tigerware' Jug Circa 1580, the silver mount inscribed on the hinge 'PETER ELY, OBT. 1684', on the cover 'GEO. GUNNING 1815 WATERLOO' and on the underside of the foot 'GIVEN BY KING CHARLES THE SECOND' and 'G.G. TO M.G. 1834' Globular with cylindrical neck and loop handle mottled in brown, the repoussé cover caste with masks and fruit below a putto and shield finial, the hinge with a double-headed eagle thumbrest, the scalloped foot with ovolo border. Height 7 1/2 inches . Provenance: Family tradition states that the jug was presented from Charles II to his Chaplain Peter Gunning, Bishop of Ely thence by descent to the present owner. Three embossed lion mask on the cover now worn and showing daylight at the high-points. The finial possibly reattached. The neck mount missing. Hairline to interior of handle terminal, not visible on exterior, hairline at back and around the footrim above mount, lighter stoneware on handle and side has a variant flourescence and is possibly a repair.
