ELIZABETH THE QUEEN MOTHER: (1900-2002) Queen Consort of King George VI. Personal letter to Sir Frederick Still, April 27th, 1930 One page, two sides well filled by hand in black ink on black bordered notepaper with Elizabeth's personal cipher. Requesting Dr Still to come and 'have a look' at Princess Elizabeth. 'She really is in perfect health, but you have not seen her for over a year' etc. Provenance: From the Estate of Sir Frederick Still M.D. Physician to The Royal Family, thence by descent. Sir George Frederic Still, KCVO (1868 - 1941) was a prominent paediatrician. Caring for children was his life’s work, to which he devoted himself entirely, publishing over a hundred papers and five books. He worked at Guy's Hospital, Great Ormand Street Hospital and the Evelina Hospital of Sick Children. Born in London, the only son in a working-class family of 12, he rose to be one of the most respected men in his field who became Physician to the Royal Household and was knighted in 1937. He is often referred to as the "Father of British Paediatrics". An extremely shy man, he was transformed in the company of children, who adored him. For my garden is the garden of children Cometh naught there but golden hours, For children are its joys and its sunshine, And they are its heaven sent flowers. -Sir George Frederick Still, 1941 This small, remarkable and entirely charming collection of letters, cuttings and photographs stand testament to the high regard in which Sir Frederick Still was held, particularly by the Royal Family. It is clear from the affectionate, yet respectful tone of Her Majesty The Queen Mother, that she valued his care and advice enormously. The delightful embroidery made by Her Majesty the Queen when she was just a five-year-old princess, is both a token of affection and also a thing of incredible rarity. Items of such a personal nature relating to our present Queen virtually never come onto the open market and the sale of these precious pieces poses an exciting opportunity for collectors of royal memorabilia.
