Beschreibung:

ELIZABETHAN] A declaration of the demeanor and cariage of Sir Walter Raleigh, Knight, . London: printed by Bonham Norton and Iohn Bill, printers to the Kings most excellent Maiestie, 1618. Panelled calf, a relatively modern pastiche of a period binding, but most attractively done. 6 7/8 x 5 inches (13 x 17.5 cm); [4], 63 [1] pp., retaining the rare blank with an "A" in a wood cut border. Slight toning, some soiling to first and last page, overall a large clean copy, the W. Stirling Maxwell copy, with his bookplate. A signifiant Americanum, as it contains details of Raleigh's last voyage to America in 1618, and mentions his attempt to locate the fabled El Dorado. The book has been attributed to Francis Bacon but was composed by the commisioners (including Bacon) appointed to try him. He was beheaded on October 29, 1618. ESTC S 115419. C
