CGC certified: VG (4.0). Off-white pages. Mexican version of Famous Funnies #213 (Eastern Color, 1954). Color interiors. Stories translated into Spanish. Frank Frazetta cover. CGC Census: This is the only graded copy. Rare mag: according to Mexican comics expert Rulo Pantoja, even Skye Ott, uncontested king of International collectors, doesn't have a copy. Frank Frazetta seldom swiped, but when he did, he went straight to the top. The cover of this Mexican rarity, reprinted from Famous Funnies #213, is modeled on a rocketship interior by the great Wally Wood. It's one of Frazetta's best covers, by fan consensus and in the artist's own opinion, and this Mexican iteration is arguably superior to the original: the "FANTASTICO" name and logo are more in keeping with Frazetta's dynamic imagery than the rather fatuous "FAMOUS FUNNIES" moniker could ever be. In terms of scarcity, this edition has the original beat by a mile: seasoned International collectors know that it's nearly impossible to find. CGC Census data bears this out: there are 67 slabbed copies of the Yankee version in circulation, while this is the sole CGC-slabbed La Prensa version in existence. Discussing this cover in a 1995 interview, Frazetta said: "I even swiped an interior rocketship scene from Wally Wood on one of the covers. I did it deliberately. Why not? If you're going to swipe a rocketship interior, who better than Wally Wood? I try never to swipe. I prefer to make things up. This was a little tribute to Woody.... It really is some of the best drawing I ever did." A deluxe limited edition of 12 hardcover catalogues is available, in addition to a small number of softcovers. 400 lots, fully illustrated. Fun reference, great keepsake. Softcover $40, deluxe hardcover with dust jacket and limitation plate $200. Eight of the 12 hardcovers are pre-ordered and the rest will go quickly, so reserve yours now. To order, contact [email protected] . Consignments welcome for PBA's Spring 2022 Comic Book sale.
