FERDINAND II of ARAGON (1452-1516) and ISABELLA I of CASTILE (1451-1504). Document signed by both ("yo el Rey" and "yo la Reyna"), Victoria, 23 November 1483. 1 page, oblong (5 7/8 x 8½in.) each signature with a large penwork flourish, extensive text in a fine, slightly flourished Spanish court hand, attestation of the royal scribe Fernando Alvares at bottom. Inlaid. In excellent condition. FERDINAND AND ISABELLA SEND INSTRUCTIONS TO A TOP GENERAL. "A Royal Charter from the King Ferdinand and the Queen Isabelle addressed to Luis Portocarrero, a member of their Royal Council in La Villa de Palma. In this Charter, the King and the Queen order Luis Portocarrero to fulfill and carry out a few affairs which they have already discussed with the Count of Cabra. Signed by the King and Queen in the City of Victoria on the twenty-third day of November of the year one thousand four hundred eighty three." Portocarrero, Lord of Palma, was one of the monarchs' top generals and died in the Battle of Seminara in 1503. A fine example of the two Spanish monarchs who sponsored Columbus's expedition to the Americas, completed la reconquista of Muslim Spain with the Treaty of Granada in 1492, and launched the Catholic Inquisition.
