San Francisco: Herald Office, 1855. 8 o (209 x 136 mm). Contemporary black sheep, gilt bordered on covers, titled in gilt on front cover (some rubbing, joints split); green quarter morocco slipcase. Provenance : T. McGlenn (pencil inscription, San Francisco, 26 May 1850 [sic] on front flyleaf and at rear, rear flyleaf with his? pencil note from Napa Valley). FIRST EDITION IN ENGLISH OF THE FIRST IMPORTANT BOOK TO BE ISSUED BY ZAMARANO'S MEXICAN PRESS IN CALIFORNIA, following the first edition in Spanish of 1835 (known in only 11 surviving copies). José Figueroa, as governor of upper California in 1833-5, oversaw the secularization of the Californian missions which brought in many important families who later took a prominent part in the development of the area. Figueroa defends his actions in the Hijar and Padres colonization program. He refused to relinquish the mission lands, and disputed the appointment of Hijar as his successor. His sudden death in 1835 while the first edition was in preparation ended the dispute.
